You’ve read the title right. Time isn’t money, contrary to the beliefs of the many grumpy businessmen in their fifties and parents trying to get their kids out the door when they’re late. In fact, I’m here to say that time is better than money and that it isn’t even comparable! The first reason for this being that money can sometimes suck (anyone who’s tried to dabble in commerce would probably agree) but also because time is the most valuable thing you have in this life separate from God, your soul, salvation and the Bible. And that’s what I’m going to try to explain to you in the next 600 words. I know, hardly any time right?
The Concept of Time
Time is present in every aspect of our lives, from warranties to soccer halftime, limited offers and even the school timetable. Time is literally unloaded into our face every single day that we are reminded of it constantly. Even reels nowadays are using “nostalgia” as a hook to keep you watching. But with all the ways we’ve used the concept of time, I wonder if this generation has lost its true meaning.
The Phrase
I’ve heard this phrase said as a joke to me a lot recently: “Teens are too timid to live but unwilling to die.” Normally, it’s used whenever I’m procrastinating and just overall wasting time, but when I read it again, the idea is quite tragic. I mean, to think that we’re throwing away a full 12.5% of our lives just because we decide to laze around is quite tragic. In a time when we’re supposed to be learning about how to live our adult lives , we don’t do any preparation and thus, when the time actually comes for responsibility, well – I think we’ve all heard the Gen Z horror stories.
Let’s Turn to the Bible
Psalm 90:12 states, “”So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” In a nutshell, this verse explains that we should live our lives according to wisdom and that we should look at our lives through the lens of time. Whether you like it or not, you never really know how much time you have. You can estimate through the general population, but even then, is 80 years really enough? The Great Commission commands you to “go and make disciples from all nations.” All. Still think you have a lot of time?
I’m not saying that you have to commit your entire lives to travelling around the world, reaching the most isolated and dangerous tribes and people on the planet. What I’m saying is that God has given us a mission. How much of your 80 years is going to be spent on yourself or God? That’s up to you.
I’m Not Perfect
Don’t be fooled into thinking I’m perfect. In fact, if you ask my friends and family, they’ll probably tell you that I’m the least time sensitive amongst us. But I’m also writing this article for myself, in hopes that my future self will thank me for being able to be used in God’s great plan. After all, in the great scheme of things, I don’t have much time left.
Time is More than Money
Look, you can scroll through these articles all day, but as long as you aren’t willing to actually stop wasting time and do the work, it’ll be practically useless. They’ll just be ideas floating around in your head, waiting for the action, the catalyst, that never comes. God’s got a plan for you but it’s only around for a limited time, so take the chance. Remember, although heaven doesn’t have any tears, sorrow or mourning, it does have regret.
Time is so much more valuable than money could ever be. Don’t waste it.
Written only through the wonderful grace of God and the sacrifice of his only son, Jesus Christ.
